‘Beauty is good, but coin is better. You can't eat artistic integrity. It tastes like sawdust.’

This gonzo guide is a lesson in the practicalities of writing how to be productive, professional and maybe one day even pay the rent.

Topics covered include ‘How to slay writer’s block’, ‘What the hell is workflow?’, ‘How to write 10,000 words in a day’ and ‘The best apps for writers’.

How to Be a Writer is a kick-arse writing guide with a tough-love approach, written for the internet generation. John Birmingham is lauded as a prolific writer working across multiple genres. Here he shares his secrets. And some hard-core, real-world practical advice. And a few excellent descriptions of explosions.

How to Be a Writer Who smashes deadlines crushes editors and lives in a solid gold hovercraft edition by John Birmingham Reference eBooks

'This book is called How to Be a Writer not How to Write'.
Thus begins John Birmingham's delightful, informative and profane masterclass on what is required to be a writer.

In his Conclusion he says: 'Storytellers, the curators of meaning, have held a special place in all cultures through all time.'

I could not agree more and this book now holds a special place in mine.

How to Be a Writer Who smashes deadlines crushes editors and lives in a solid gold hovercraft edition by John Birmingham Reference eBooks Reviews

There are so many books on the current market, dealing with writing, publishing, marketing and so on. I've read a few of them, but this one is the first which delivers a fantastic, new approach to delivering handy, helpful information across all spectrums of the publishing industry (both traditional and self-publishing). I loved the humour and 'in your face' style JB brings to the table. There's certainly no gently taking a new author's hand and pointing out all the wonders of the new world that is authoring, stopping to offer ooos and aahs at the appropriate moments. Rather, it's a good, sharp slap in the face, some rough shaking of the shoulders, a smack on the back of the head and a 'right, you ready to go? You better be!' type approach, which I found refreshing. If you're an author, or would like to be an author, or are dreaming of possibly one day, far in the future, maybe becoming an author...maybe, then this book is for you! Highly recommended.
One of the best books of this type. Hewson writes very well and practically about structure and story development.
Writing might be a calling but it's also hard work. This book was a hands down, no sugar coating guide on what it means to be a writer. The book handless the work from the point of both freelancing and novel writing.
I really loved this. Birmingham's prose kept me reading as fast as I could turn the pages, and the advice is motivating. I am now girded and prepared to kick self-doubt in the dick.
Birmo, is always enjoyable to read, and this book was an absolute joy. It was also pretty useful, or at least offered plenty of insights into the industry some of we crazies have decided to get into.

I usually rate Birmo at five stars, the four-star rating is only because at this point I've read so many of these sorts of books (home schooling myself on the industry). If it had been the first one I read it might have been five stars. Well worth the time, either way.

Unless you're a poet...
It's like a lecture from a master where you can see the level on the Scotch bottle dropping over the hour, he starts to get a bit shouty, suddenly he's calling his colleagues arse-weasels and giving you the real deal on navigating the industry he knows so well. In short, all the good stuff before he turns maudlin, becomes incomprehensible from the slurring, and has to be cancel his remaining appearances due to "exhaustion".
I've been delighted by JB's books for two decades now, and when I saw the opportunity to abduct, hijack, and ransom some of his impressive talent for my own earnest writing goals, I was all over that like cling-wrap.  And then my pre-ordered book arrived, and the first line told me that the book was called 'how to be a writer' not 'how to write.'  Damnation to his literal correctness! I huffily went back to my project.
Yet thankfully, I was lured back to JB's writing Dojo.  Not all the parts were applicable to me. But there is gold plated advice in here which I'm already applying to my work.  My writing jujitsu still needs a lot of work, but I'm a more confident practitioner than I was before.
